NHS Health Checks

Eligible Warwickshire residents aged 40-74 can access a free NHS health checks once every five years via their local GP practice.

If you are aged between 40-74 without an existing health condition, you’re likely to be eligible for a free NHS health check every five years. These simple checks help to screen for risks of health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and stroke, as well as offering advice and guidance on how to stay well as you age.

An NHS health check will typically include:

  • a blood test to check your cholesterol and blood sugar
  • Blood pressure check
  • Height and weight measurements to determine your body mass index (BMI)
  • Questionnaire to assess your mobility and exercise levels

 

Health checks usually involve a face to face appointment with a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) for up to 30 minutes. The blood test will either be done in advance or on the day and results will be discussed during your health check appointment.

Depending on your discussion, you may be invited for further tests or directed to other health or lifestyle services. The main aim of these checks is to help people stay healthy for longer and spot potential illnesses early so they are easier to treat.

 

Requesting a health check

In most cases, your GP will invite you to attend a health check if you are eligible. You can also request a health check by contacting your normal GP practice.

If you have an existing health condition such as cardiovascular or respiratory disease, you will not be eligible for these checks as your health is managed in a different way.

If you believe you are eligible and haven’t had a health check within the last five years, contact your GP to request one.

Why do I need this check?

NHS Health Checks help to identify potential risks early. By having this check and following the advice of your health professional, you improve your chances of living a healthier life for longer.

Health checks are particularly important in spotting risk factors or early signs of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, diabetes or dementia.

Will I see a GP?
No. Health checks are usually provided by a trained Healthcare Assistant (HCA) who is experienced in completing the relevant tests. However, should you need additional medical support as a result of the health check, the HCA may refer you to your GP or other clinician.
Where will my health check take place?
In most cases, health checks will be held at your normal GP practice. In some areas, your surgery may work with other local surgeries to provide appointments at shared sites. Contact your normal surgery to find out more.
How do I book or change my appointment?
In most cases, appointments are booked via your own GP surgery so please contact your GP practice with any appointment queries or changes.
Who will be providing the service?

From 1 July 2026, NHS Health Checks are provided by your GP surgery on behalf of Integrated Primary Care (IPC). Warwickshire County Council funds these health checks as part of its public health responsibilities. Warwickshire County Council has awarded IPC with the contract to run the health checks in Warwickshire which we will deliver in partnership with GP practices.

IPC already works closely with GP practices across the county to provide patient services. We are a not-for-profit organisation made up of the GP Federations in Coventry & Warwickshire.

About our service

NHS Health Checks in Warwickshire are delivered by IPC Warwickshire on behalf of Warwickshire County Council. Our delivery partner for this service is South Warwickshire GP Federation.

The health checks will be delivered by GP practices in Warwickshire.
