Primary Care Dermatology

Primary Care Dermatology (PCD) is a community-based service which provides specialist treatment for patients with a range of routine dermatological conditions where these cannot be treated at your normal GP practice.

Primary Care Dermatology (PCD) provides specialist GP’s with extra training and experience in dermatology who care for patients with a range of dermatological conditions where these cannot be treated at your normal GP practice. The service is also managed with consultant oversight.

The service includes:

  • Mild to moderate forms of common rashes (psoriasis, eczema)
  • Benign and pre-malignant lesions
  • Acne (including isotretinoin prescribing)
  • Minor surgical procedures (cryotherapy, biopsies, cautery)
  • Conditions of the hair, scalp and nails
  • Genital dermatology (excluding sexual health conditions)

If you are a patient aged 16 years or over and registered at a Coventry and Warwickshire GP Practice, you can be referred by your GP. Patients cannot self-refer into the service.

All referrals to Primary Care Dermatology are triaged to assess suitability and treatment is provided by GPs with additional training and experience in dermatology with consultant oversight.

Appointments will typically be offered at one of several clinic locations across Coventry and Warwickshire based in GP practices.

Typical wait time is fourteen to eighteen weeks from point of referral.

The service is accessed via GP referral only and is for routine referrals only – any instance where cancer is suspected will follow the normal priority hospital referral pathway.

A poster for GPs, which summarises the service and referral information, can be downloaded here: PCD Poster for GPs

Frequently asked questions

How do I change my appointment?

Please get in touch as early as possible if you need to cancel or change your appointment so that it can be offered to someone else.

For all appointment and other queries, contact us:

Opening hours: Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm
E-mail: swg-tr.primarycaredermatology@nhs.net
Telephone: 01926 698299

Will I get the specialist care I need?

Yes. Referrals are initially triaged to assess whether they are suitable for our service. If not, the patient will be passed onto secondary care.

GPs delivering Primary Care Dermatology have undergone additional training to take on this role, including clinical experience of delivering dermatology services. The service is also managed with consultant oversight.

How quickly will I be seen?

Although we can’t give an exact timeframe, we aim to see you within fourteen to eighteen weeks. The waiting times for the primary care service are likely to be much shorter than being referred to hospital.

Will I see my normal GP?

Referrals are initially triaged to assess whether they are suitable for our service, you will then be seen by a GP with additional training and expertise in dermatology, and treatment will be provided in dedicated clinic sessions (even if based at your normal practice).

The service is also managed with consultant oversight.

The outcomes of your visit to our clinic will be included in the clinical notes at your GP practice, with your consent, so your GP will know what treatment you have received and any ongoing care that may be required once you have been discharged from our service.

Who will be providing the service?

Primary Care Dermatology is run by Coventry & Warwickshire Integrated Primary Care which is made up of the GP Federations which represent local GP practices across the region. We are also working with Consultant Connect who provide the consultant dermatologists and secondary care oversight.

Referrals are initially triaged to assess whether they are suitable for our service and then seen in clinics by specially trained GPs with extra training in dermatology.

By working together in this way, we can provide more services to patients within local communities.

Will providing this service impact the general availability of GP appointments?

No. Although many of the clinicians running this service will be from local practices, any time dedicated to this service will be outside of their existing GP commitments. Running this service will not lead to a reduction in the amount of GP appointments at your local practice.
